Letters From England
I promised you all a “Letters From England” to wrap up my summer travels so here it is!
England was lovely. In England I visited London, (See “Letters From London” here) - "Letters From London : Puttin' On The Ritz" Windsor, Bath, The Cotswolds, Oxford, and Stonehenge! I’ll give you a little recap of each place.
Windsor :
Windsor was my favorite place that I visited in England. I really enjoyed Windsor! It was elegant, quaint, and pretty, and I did some good shopping there. There was lovely gardens, and pretty flowers which I liked. The Windsor Castle was lovely. Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world! The town of Windsor is super cute as well.
What’s special about Windsor is that it’s an in-use castle. Over 150 people live and work at Windsor castle. This was a highlight of visiting England for me, because most often when you visit a palace it’s of past monarchies, but England is an ongoing and active monarchy; which makes visiting a place like Windsor Castle special, as the guards are on duty and it’s an active and working castle.
Most everything in the town of Windsor is royal themed, there is a walkway called “The Queens Walkway” and even the train is called “The Queen” which is why I suppose I liked this town so much. Haha.
I got to see Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb, as she is buried in Windsor, at Saint George’s Chapel. Windsor castle was the weekend residence of Queen Elizabeth II, and she preferred the Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace.
Bath :
Home to some of the most notable and well preserved Roman ruins in the world. Bath gets its name from the ancient Roman Baths dating to 70 AD. The entire city of Bath is a UNESCO world heritage site. Bath was known as a “spa city” with many hot springs.
Bath has Gregorian architecture. If I recall correctly, the tour guide said that every building in bath has to be made of the same stone, the local “Bath stone.” A golden honey colored limestone.
I enjoyed Bath. It’s a place I would go back too, and explore more of. I would like to have tea in one of the Gregorian tea rooms. If you ever find yourself in England I would say, stop by Bath. It’s a very unique place, that doesn’t remind me of any other places I’ve visited.
The Cotswolds :
Sweet English countryside, which inspired “Alice in Wonderland” the absolute cutest little cottages. It was so lovely, and storybook-like! Makes me want to have a little cottage and bake homemade fresh scones, jam and cream, and frolic around the fields, while looking at the swans…so dreamy!
While in England, you must get a “cream tea” which is tea and a scone with clotted cream and jam. There’s a ongoing debate in England on whether jam or cream goes first on the scone. Putting cream on the scone first is considered the “Devon” way, and putting jam first on the scone is considered the “Cornwall” way. I definitely think the cream goes first!
Oxford :
Oxford University is the world’s second oldest university, and C.S. Lewis’ stomping grounds. It was neat to visit! I had a really good lemonade here.
Stonehenge :
Stonehenge is a world mystery. A strange rock formation in southern England, that is comprised of roughly 100 massive upright stones placed in a circular layout that mysteriously appeared thousands of years ago, and nobody knows how it got there. The question is how people thousands of years ago placed these stones in a formation when they are extremely heavy and it was before the invention of the wheel!
I hope you all had a great summer! Summer doesn’t end until September 22nd, so enjoy the rest of it and remember not to rush the seasons. - My 25th birthday is this Saturday (September 14th) if you may offer up a prayer for me I would greatly appreciate it! If you want to make a donation as a birthday present to support my ministry that would be nice too!
